Artist's Comments

no matter what religious persuasion (or lack thereof) you have, there is always something majestic about a well constructed place of worship.

this was taken in the süleymaniye mosque in istanbul. i love those lights suspended from the ceiling. they're a very common feature in mosques. like massive chandeliers.

i took many pictures of mosques while in turkey and this one is my favorite.

much color/contrast/levels editing in photoshop, although the overall feeling of warmth was there in the original photo. relatively lengthy exposure length, hence the blurriness of the figures, and overexposure of the lights, both of which i like. would have been a little better if it was shot head on, but alas, it was not.

It's very nice how you've focused on the lightning, and not the persons on the floor, since you wanted to emphasize the lightning.
Perhaps it would make a more majestic look if you'd rotate it a bit, so the lines on the walls were 90 degrees vertical, and not the floor?
You could try a Photo filther (warm) in photoshop too, to "warm up" the photo, 'cause I think you've got a bigger sence and idea of what kind of feeling and vein was in the actual mosque.

hmm, interesting idea about the rotating there. i might try that. it might make it a little disorienting with the people even more skewed though, as the one of the first things people look to for orienation is someone standing. i'll give it a go though. and i did try photoshop's warm photo filters. nothing really gave me an effect i really liked that i hadn't already done through the channel mixer and selective color and adjustments like that. i didn't want it way too warm (i actually ended up desaturating it a little bit in the end) because then it became unreal.

anyway, thank you for the constructive comment. they are relatively rare :)

I love this. The pictures I took there didn't turn out nearly as well--I didn't take a tripod with me--but I loved the lights there, and you handled the composition of this one very well.

thanks a bunch. yeah it was tough with the low light - i actually forgot my tripod on the whole trip which sucked - i just improvised with those little wooden barrier/fences in there, holding the camera still on those. anyway, thanks again :)

I did a lot of that, too, but it didn't occur to me to use the railings there. Next time, though, I'm taking the tripod. =)

I've worked with a lot of photographers and seen probably hundreds of photography portfolios. Generally I'm really picky and hard to impress and honestly think that a lot of things are cliched and over done in photography. But I really like this. A really majestic and divine look. The architecture is clear and concise but yet the the focus is on the soft lights.

I deem you properly artistic and wickedly deviant sir.
:headbang:
Go you!
:iconsoulspit:
well thank you very much. it's always nice to impress people (although this photo is infinitely less impressive than the structure itself). i agree that much photography is overdone - browse deviantart's indoor architecture galleries and you might see, oh, a spiral staircase or two.

glad to know i have been deemed wickedly deviant etcetera, ma'am
